The Ssese Islands in a nutshell

The Ssese Islands are an archipelago in Lake Victoria that forms Kalangala District in Uganda. The district counts 84 islands and lists 64 of them as permanently inhabited (August 2026); older sources give lower numbers. Bugala is the main island. Kalangala Town is on Bugala, and the MV Kalangala ferry from Nakiwogo near Entebbe lands at Lutoboka on the same island. There is no road link to the mainland, so every trip includes a boat.

This guide covers the islands and the ways to reach them: the two ferry routes, Bugala and Lutoboka, Banda Island, beaches, fishing, weather, places to stay and safety on the lake. It is an independent site, not run by the district, the Uganda Tourism Board, a ferry operator, a lodge or a tour company. Jinja, the source of the Nile and white-water rafting are covered by a separate guide to Jinja. Prices are in Uganda shillings (UGX) with a rough dollar value, as listed in 2026, and they change.

Good to know before you book

Points where older pages and forums are out of date or contradict each other.

Two ferries, two operators

The MV Kalangala sails between Entebbe (Nakiwogo) and Lutoboka. The MV Pearl and MV Ssese cross between Bukakata and Bugoma in about 30 minutes. Their timetables, fares and operators differ.

Confirm the return time

The operator's ticket page lists a departure from Kalangala at 08:00 and from Nakiwogo at 14:00. One older source gives 11:00 for the return, so ask before you plan around it.

Swimming is not simply safe

The US health agency CDC advises against swimming in untreated fresh water in Uganda because of schistosomiasis. A resort beach is not a health clearance.

Yellow fever rule changed

Uganda's immigration authority announced on 2 October 2026 that a yellow fever certificate is no longer compulsory for entry. The German Foreign Office still recommends the vaccination, and a country you travel on to may ask for proof.

New ferries are announced, not running

In June 2026 the government announced extra ferries. A night crossing ordered earlier had not started by February 2026. Plan with the daytime timetable.

Forest visits are not one rule

The ministry in charge of forests lists Lutoboka Central Forest Reserve and says activities are not yet listed online. Do not assume a booking rule or a fee from another reserve.

Ssese Islands: frequently asked questions

How do I get to the Ssese Islands?

By boat. The MV Kalangala leaves Nakiwogo near Entebbe at 14:00 and arrives at 17:30, according to the operator's ticket page. The MV Pearl and MV Ssese cross from Bukakata, on the Masaka side, to Bugoma in about 30 minutes. See the ferry page and tours page.

When is the best time to go?

There is no single best month. An older district profile describes two rainy periods, March to May and October to November. In the long-term Entebbe averages (1961–1990), July to September and January to February are relatively drier, but no month is rain-free. Entebbe is on the mainland, so these figures are a proxy, not island measurements. See the weather page.

Which island should I choose?

Bugala has Kalangala Town, Lutoboka and most of the road network. Banda is a separate island camp reached by boat. Read the pages on Bugala and Banda.

Is it safe to swim in the lake?

The CDC advises against swimming in fresh water in Uganda because of schistosomiasis, and a beach does not change that. If you take a boat, wear a life jacket. See beaches and safety.

Is Kalangala safe for travelers?

Governments give different advice for Uganda as a whole, and Kalangala is not named in the regional lists of the UK or German advice. The UK Foreign Office advice was last changed on 8 October 2026 and has no blanket warning against travel to Uganda. The US State Department lists level 4, "Do not travel", for all of Uganda (4 June 2026). The German Foreign Office text of 9 October 2026 names other regions. Read the safety page and check the current advice of your own government.

Do I need a visa and a yellow fever certificate?

Many visitors apply online for a single-entry tourist visa at USD 50, valid for up to 3 months, and should not rely on getting one on arrival. Since 2 October 2026 a yellow fever certificate is no longer compulsory for entry. Rules change, so check the immigration authority and your own government.

Is the Bukakata ferry free?

A newspaper reported in February 2026 that the state pays for free transport of people and cargo on this route. In June 2026 the same paper reported that interim contracts were running out and that it was unclear how the service would continue. Ask on the day.

Is kalangala.org run by the district or a ferry company?

No. This is an independent travel guide with no link to the district, the Uganda Tourism Board, any ferry operator, any lodge or any tour operator.
