Ten ideas for the Ssese Islands
The islands are quiet. You will not find a long list of ticketed sights. What you will find are walks, rides, boat trips and a few days of doing little by the water. The ten ideas below are activities that providers on Bugala and Banda list as part of their programs. Ideas 1 to 5 are offered by a lodge on Bugala, ideas 6 to 10 by the island camp on Banda.
Guided offers and places you can simply walk into are not the same thing. Ask the provider about price, times and the minimum age when you book, because these details are not fixed across the islands. If you are still choosing a base, read about Bugala Island and Banda Island first.

On and around Bugala
Offers that a lodge on the main island lists.
1. Guided forest walk
The lodge lists guided walks in the forest. Walk with a guide, not alone, and ask which paths are open to visitors. Do not feed or touch animals you meet.
2. Cycling
Cycling is on the same activity list. Ask the lodge about routes, bike condition and distances before you set off in the heat.
3. Quad biking
Quad rides are offered by the lodge. This does not mean every forest path is open to quads, so stay on the route your guide chooses.
4. Boat ride
Boat rides on the lake are part of the offer. Wear a life jacket on every trip, and do not board a small boat that has none.
Safety on the lake →5. Tour of Kalangala Town
The lodge also lists tours of Kalangala Town. It is the main settlement on Bugala, and a tour gives you the local context for the rest of your stay.
Bugala Island →Our picks: things to do
Kayaking and quad bikes on Kalangala, a cultural trip and a sport-fishing day from Entebbe.
Hand-picked tours, booked through GetYourGuide. Prices are indicative starting prices in US dollars (as of October 2026). Tap a tour for live availability and the current price in your currency.

Boat trips, birding and wildlife outings from Entebbe and Kampala, with live prices and availability.
On and around Banda Island
Offers that the island camp lists.
6. Fishing
The camp advertises shore fishing and trolling. Recreational fishing needs a permit under Uganda's Fisheries and Aquaculture Act of 2023, so ask how to get yours before you cast a line.
Fishing guide →7. Birdwatching
Birding is part of the camp's program, and it keeps its own bird list. Sightings are never certain, so treat it as a walk with binoculars rather than a guarantee.
8. Nature and village walk
The camp lists a walk through nature and the village. Go with someone who lives there, ask before you take photos of people and keep to the paths.
9. Beach volleyball
Volleyball is on the activity list and suits a group that has been sitting on a boat. It is a simple game on the sand, not an organized event.
10. Bonfire evening
The camp offers bonfire evenings. This is a hosted fire at the camp. It is not permission to light your own fire in a forest or a protected area.
The island is reached by boat. See Banda Island for the transfers and the published rates.

Before you plan the days
Four points that shape any activity on the islands.
The ferry sets your first and last day
The MV Kalangala is listed with a departure from Nakiwogo at 14:00 and arrival at 17:30, and from Kalangala at 08:00. Count the first afternoon and the last morning as travel days.
Ferry guide →Swimming needs a health warning
The CDC advises against swimming in untreated fresh water in Uganda because of schistosomiasis. Wading and washing in the lake can also expose you.
Beaches →Rain changes the plan
An older district profile describes two rainy periods, March to May and October to November. In the long-term Entebbe averages (1961–1990), July to September and January to February are relatively drier, but never rain-free.
Weather →Rafting and the Nile are elsewhere
White-water rafting and the source of the Nile belong to Jinja, on the other side of the lake. The Jinja guide covers them.

Providers mention swimming, but the CDC advises against swimming in untreated fresh water in Uganda. Read the beaches page before you decide.
Can I combine Bugala and Banda?
Yes, by boat. The camp on Banda lists a transfer from Lutoboka at UGX 150,000 (about $40) per boat and direction, taking about 45 to 60 minutes depending on wind and waves. Confirm it before you travel.
