Where to stay on the Ssese Islands
Most visitors choose between three kinds of base. A resort or lodge on Bugala Island, the main island, is the easiest option if you arrive by ferry. Banda Island offers tents, cabins and cottages in a camp-style setting, reached by boat. Bulago, a separate Lake Victoria island, has a private villa and cottage run by its own operator.
Prices below are those published by the operators. Most pages carry no date, so treat them as a guide for 2026 and confirm the rate, the room type and what is included when you book. Hotel names and facts come from the properties' own websites.

Places with published details
Where each base is and how you reach it.
| Place | Island | Type | Getting there |

| Brovad Sands Lodge | Bugala | Lodge | Has its own boat, the MV Brovad; ask the lodge about departure point, reporting time and day |

Banda Island rates
Per person per night as published by the island camp. Read October 2026, and the page carries no date, so confirm before you book.

| Own tent, self-catering | UGX 80,000 (about $20) | You cook for yourself |
| Dormitory or lazy camping | UGX 170,000 (about $45) | Meals included |
| Safari tent or beach cabin | UGX 190,000 (about $50) | Meals included |
| Cottage with own bathroom | UGX 190,000 (about $50) | At least 2 people; meals included |
The island camp's page says children under 4 stay free when they share the tent or cabin of an adult, and bring their own special baby food. Children under 10 pay 50 percent. An older reply from the camp gave different age limits, so ask for your children's exact rate before you book.
Cancellation as published: a full refund within 48 hours of booking if check-in is at least 14 days away, 50 percent if you cancel at least 7 days before, and no refund in the last 7 days. For the boat from the mainland, see Banda Island.
Choosing a base on Bugala
If you arrive by the afternoon ferry from Entebbe, the published timetable shows a departure from Nakiwogo at 14:00 and arrival at Kalangala at 17:30. That is late in the day, so a bed close to the pier makes the first evening easy. The published Economy fare is UGX 10,000 (about $3) one way. Check the current timetable and fare with the operator before you travel.
Mirembe Resort Beach Hotel is the simplest match for that plan, since it is 500 m from the pier. Brovad Sands Lodge works well if you want to arrive on its own boat, which you arrange with the lodge. Do not confuse it with a similarly named hotel on the mainland.
Brovad's activity menu lists forest walks, cycling, quad biking, boat rides and Kalangala town tours, so a lodge can be your base for days out. Read the Bugala Island page to see what is near each place. The ferry options are on the ferry page.

Booking tips
Details to settle before you pay.
Ask for the current room rate
Room rates change with the season and the room type. Ask for the price in writing, with meals and any fees.
Confirm the transfer
The ferry arrival, the last leg to your door and any boat from the mainland are separate arrangements. Ask who meets you and what it costs. At Mirembe, the Lutoboka hotel shuttle is free.
Swimming is not a health clearance
Lodges advertise lake and pool swimming. Health authorities still advise against swimming in untreated freshwater in Uganda because of bilharzia. A resort beach does not change that. See beaches.
Plan for weather and ferry changes
Storms and ferry delays can shift your arrival. Leave room in your schedule, and read the weather page for the rainy months.
Beyond the islands
For hotels and lodges on the Nile, see where to stay in Jinja. Rafting, the source of the Nile and the forest at Mabira belong to that guide.
On the islands themselves, a camp like Banda suits a quiet stay close to the water, and a resort on Bugala suits an easy ferry connection. You can do both on one trip if you plan the boat transfers carefully.

Where to stay on the Ssese Islands: frequently asked questions
What is the best place to stay on the Ssese Islands?
That depends on how you travel. A beach hotel near the Lutoboka pier suits a ferry arrival, Banda Island suits a camp stay on the water, and Brovad Sands Lodge suits a stay with its own boat link.
How much does a room cost?
Banda Island publishes rates from UGX 80,000 (about $20) for a self-catering tent to UGX 190,000 (about $50) for a cottage per person per night, as read in October 2026. For other places, ask for a quote.
Can I stay on Banda Island with children?
Yes. Under 4 stay free when they share an adult's tent or cabin, and under 10 pay 50 percent, as published. An older reply gave different limits, so confirm your children's rate.
Where should I stay if I arrive on the evening ferry?
Pick a place close to the pier. Mirembe Resort Beach Hotel states that it is 500 m from the Lutoboka pier and about 3 km from Kalangala Town. Confirm your transfer when you book.
Do the places arrange transfers?
Mirembe lists a free hotel shuttle at Lutoboka and a special pickup from Bugoma at UGX 150,000 (about $40) with a reservation. Banda arranges boats from Lutoboka for UGX 150,000 per boat each way. Brovad has its own boat. Confirm prices when you book.
