Bugala at a glance
Bugala, also spelled Buggala, is the main island of the Ssese Islands. Kalangala Town Council lies on it, and so do both ferry landings that visitors use. Bugala is the practical base for a first visit. Banda, the other base, is a separate island reached by boat.
This page is an independent guide. It is not run by the district, a ministry, a ferry operator or a lodge. Distances and times quoted from lodges are their own estimates.

Two landings, two routes
Which one you use depends on where you start.
| Landing | Ferry | From the mainland | Onward |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lutoboka | MV Kalangala | Nakiwogo near Entebbe, planned 3½ hours | Resort about 500 m away, shuttle listed as free |
| Bugoma | MV Pearl and MV Ssese | Bukakata on the Masaka side, about 30 minutes | Kalangala about 40 minutes by car, about an hour by shared taxi |
Times are estimates from operators and lodges. Times, fares and the free-crossing question for the Bukakata route are on the ferry page.

Kalangala Town and Lutoboka
Kalangala Town is the main settlement on Bugala. A lodge lists tours of the town as an activity, which makes it a reasonable first stop for orientation. Lutoboka is the landing for the Entebbe ferry and a working fishing place. A newspaper report of September 2026 describes fish moving from Lutoboka to Entebbe by ferry, so the landing is busy and not a tourist stage.
Photos show wooden boats, canoes and fishermen's huts at the landing, and a fish cage off the shore. Treat the landing as a place where people work. Ask before you take photos of people.
Two places to stay on Bugala are Mirembe Resort Beach Hotel and Brovad Sands Lodge. The resort hotel at Lutoboka says it is about 500 m from the ferry landing and about 3 km from Kalangala Town, and it lists a free shuttle between the landing and the hotel. The lodge runs its own boat, the MV Brovad. Ask both for current room prices. More on the where to stay page.

Forest and oil palm
The ministry in charge of forests lists Lutoboka Central Forest Reserve in Kalangala District. Under Lutoboka the page says that activities are not yet listed online. The ministry describes online booking of an activity and a date in general terms. That does not prove that every walk needs a booking, and the published fee document has no entry for Lutoboka. Do not assume that fees from other reserves apply here.
Oil palm is the second landscape you will see. The national oil palm project describes its approach on Kalangala as consolidating existing plantations, without supporting an expansion of the planted area. The district profile, an older document, says that the loss of forest since 2002 is partly due to oil palm growing. It names a settlement at Buguzi that belongs to a palm oil company. It does not give a current figure for the planted area.
Ask your lodge before you enter a plantation or plan a visit to one.

What to know on Bugala
Practical points for a stay.
Wildlife
Do not touch or feed unfamiliar animals, including monkeys. A bite or scratch needs a doctor. A lodge lists guided forest walks, but no species or sightings are promised.
Things to do →Swimming
The CDC advises against swimming in untreated fresh water in Uganda because of schistosomiasis. A hotel beach does not change that.
Beaches and health →Malaria
The German Foreign Office describes a high malaria risk all year across Uganda. Use mosquito protection and ask a doctor about prophylaxis before you travel.
Health and safety →Boats and life jackets
Wear a life jacket on every boat, including short hops between landings and lodges. Skip any small boat without one.
Safety on the lake →The north shore of the lake is a different trip. For the Nile at Jinja, see the Lake Victoria page of the Jinja guide.
Bugala Island: frequently asked questions
Where does the ferry from Entebbe land?
At Lutoboka on Bugala. The ticket page lists a departure from Nakiwogo at 14:00 and an arrival at 17:30. See the ferry page.
How far is Kalangala Town from Lutoboka?
A resort at Lutoboka gives about 3 km. That is the hotel's own figure, so ask your lodge how you will get there.
Is there a path through Lutoboka Central Forest Reserve?
The ministry lists the reserve but says activities are not yet listed online. Ask your lodge what is open to visitors and whether a booking or fee applies.
Is oil palm important on Bugala?
Plantations are a visible part of the landscape. The national project describes consolidating existing plantations, and an older district profile links forest loss since 2002 partly to oil palm.
Can I get to Banda from Bugala?
Yes, by boat. The camp on Banda lists a transfer from Lutoboka at UGX 150,000 (about $40) per boat and direction. See Banda Island.
