Banda Island at a glance
Banda lies in Lake Victoria and belongs to the Ssese group of islands. The district's older profile lists Banda and Serinya under the Bufumira area. The island is reached by boat only, either from the mainland at Kasenyi or from Bugala, the main Ssese island.
Several places carry the name Banda, so confirm the exact landing with your boat operator before you set off. Everything below comes from the operator's published pages, which carry no date. Treat all prices as 2026 guides and confirm them when you book.

How to get to Banda
Three routes are published. None of them is an official timetable, so ask before you plan around one.
| Route | Time | Cost in 2026 | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public boat from Kasenyi | About 3 hours, stop at Kitobo | UGX 40,000 (about $11) per person | Listed departure 13:30. The lodge is not the operator, and the 2026 schedule is not confirmed. |
| Special transfer from Lutoboka | 45 to 60 minutes | UGX 150,000 (about $41) per boat and direction | Arranged through the lodge. Depends on wind and waves. |
| Special transfer from Mwena | – | UGX 130,000 (about $36) per boat and direction | Arranged through the lodge. |
At Kasenyi the boats lie off the shore, so you board from the shore. Porters are available for an extra fee. The return time of the public boat is not published, so ask when you book. If you arrive on Bugala first, the ferry page explains how to cross from the mainland: see our Kalangala ferry guide.

Boat safety on the way
Small boats are the weak point of any island trip. The UK government names overloading as a common factor in ferry accidents on Lake Victoria. Do not board a small boat without a life jacket for every passenger. The US health agency CDC recommends wearing one on every boat trip.
Life jackets on the Kasenyi boats are not guaranteed, so ask before you pay. If a boat looks full or in poor shape, wait for another. Check the weather as well, because storms build quickly on the lake. Our weather guide and safety page cover the details.

What to do on Banda
The activities the island lists for guests.
Fishing
Shore fishing and trolling are offered. Recreational fishing needs a permit under Uganda's fisheries law, and a boat operator's licence does not automatically cover you. See our fishing guide.
Birding
Birding is part of the island's programme, and the lodge publishes its own bird list. Sightings are never guaranteed.
Nature and village walk
A nature and village walk is listed as a regular activity.
Volleyball and bonfire
Beach volleyball and an evening bonfire are on the list. Light fires only where the lodge allows it.
Swimming
Swimming is advertised, but a lodge listing is not a health clearance. Read the swimming advice on our beaches page first.
