How trips to the Ssese Islands work
The islands lie in Lake Victoria, so every trip combines a road leg with a boat leg. From Kampala you drive to the boat, either to Nakiwogo near Entebbe or to Bukakata on the Masaka side. One Entebbe operator lists Ssese Islands trips as arrangements made on request. That is a bookable private offer, not a published daily departure.
Other trips from Entebbe stay on the lake near the mainland: a sunset cruise, a birding trip to the Mabamba swamp, a visit to Ngamba Island and fishing trips. They are not Ssese Islands tours, but visitors often combine them with a stay. The examples below come from single operators. They show what one product costs, not a market range.

The Mabamba trip carries no sighting guarantee. Ngamba belongs to the Koome island group, about 23 km south of Entebbe, and is a separate outing from the Ssese Islands. Do not expect free-living chimpanzees on Bugala.

Four ways to reach Bugala
Times are estimates from operators and lodges and change with traffic and weather.
The Entebbe ferry
Drive to Nakiwogo and take the MV Kalangala. The ticket page lists departure at 14:00 and arrival at 17:30, from Kalangala at 08:00. Economy costs UGX 10,000 (about $3) and first class UGX 14,000 (about $4), as listed in 2026. The airport shuttle is not part of the ticket.
Ferry guide →The Masaka route
A lodge estimates about 2½ hours from Kampala to Nyendo near Masaka and about 40 minutes on to Bukakata. The MV Pearl and MV Ssese then cross to Bugoma in about 30 minutes. From Bugoma to Kalangala it takes about 40 minutes by car or about an hour by shared taxi.
Crossing details →Your lodge arranges it
Some lodges run their own transfers. One lists a boat of its own, and another offers a pickup from Bugoma for UGX 150,000 (about $40) by reservation. Ask what is included before you pay.
Where to stay →A private trip
An operator can arrange the whole journey on request. The schedule is yours, and the price is agreed with the operator. Ask for it in writing, and ask about the life jackets on board.
What to check before you book
The points that decide whether a trip is good value and safe.
What the price covers
The ferry fare, the road transfer and the airport shuttle are separate items. Ask whether the price covers all three.
Life jackets
The CDC advises wearing a life jacket on every boat trip. An operator's note that a jacket is available in an emergency is not the same as wearing one. Skip any small boat without life jackets.
Safety on the lake →Overloaded boats
The UK Foreign Office names overloading as a common factor in ferry accidents on Lake Victoria. Use an established operator, and do not board a boat that looks overloaded or unfit.
Vehicles and cargo
The MV Kalangala operator advises asking for a vehicle or cargo space one day ahead. Fares are listed per vehicle type, from UGX 20,000 (about $6) for a motorcycle to UGX 70,000 (about $19) for an SUV, as listed in 2026.
Season and timing
Birding and fishing depend on the time of day and the rains. One operator advises against fishing around full moon and in the April and May rains. This is advice, not a legal closed season.
Weather →Cancellation
Ferry schedules can change, and a vessel can be out of service. Look for a free cancellation or rebooking rule on any trip you pay for in advance.
Tour or on your own?
The trade-offs.
Pros of a booked trip
One contact, a fixed meeting point, a guide and a boat and crew arranged by the operator. This helps most if you arrive late or travel with children.
Cons of a booked trip
The day is fixed, and the price may be higher than the public ferry fare. Trips on the lake near Entebbe do not take you to the Ssese Islands.
Pros of going alone
The ferry fare is low, and you choose the day and your lodge. Bugala has a published crossing from Entebbe and a second route from Bukakata.
Cons of going alone
You plan the road leg, the boarding time and the return yourself. The Jinja side of the lake has its own boat options, covered by the Jinja boat trips guide.

Ssese Islands tours: frequently asked questions
Is there a daily tour from Kampala to the Ssese Islands?
No daily departure is published. An Entebbe operator lists Ssese Islands trips as arrangements on request, and you can also travel on your own by ferry. See the ferry page.
Can I do the Ssese Islands as a day trip?
It is hard. The MV Kalangala leaves Nakiwogo at 14:00 and reaches Kalangala at 17:30, and the return leaves at 08:00. Plan at least one night on the islands.
How much is a sunset cruise from Entebbe?
One operator lists about $25 per person for 1 to 2 hours in the late afternoon, depending on visitor category, boat and group size. Confirm the price for your date.
Can I see a shoebill at Mabamba?
It is the aim of the trip, but there is no guarantee. The operator lists 3 to 4 hours, best early in the morning or late in the afternoon, at about $100 per person.
Is Ngamba part of the Ssese Islands?
No. Ngamba belongs to the Koome group, about 23 km south of Entebbe. It is a separate trip from a Ssese stay.
