Is Kalangala safe?
No guide can give a blanket answer, and this one does not try. Governments assess Uganda as a whole, and they disagree in how strongly they word it. The practical risks for a trip to the Ssese Islands are on the water, in the water and from mosquitoes.
Below, the advice of three governments is set out separately, with dates. Read the current version of your own government's page before you book, because the details change. This guide is independent and is not an official source.

What governments say about Uganda
Three official positions, each with its own date and wording.
| Government | Position | Date |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Level 4, "Do not travel", for all of Uganda, citing crime, health, terrorism and unrest | 4 June 2026 |
| United Kingdom | No numbered level and no warning against all travel. Areas of concern are the western border with the DRC, the South Sudan border and parts of Kampala | 8 October 2026 |
| Germany | Advises strongly against non-essential travel to Semliki National Park and the DRC border zone within 20 km. Asks for special care in several national parks and in Karamoja | 9 October 2026 |
None of these pages names Kalangala in its list of risk areas. That is not a safety clearance. The US level covers the whole country, so it applies to the islands too.
Our picks: a lake trip with life jackets
Life jackets are part of this sunset cruise to the Equator monument, in line with the advice on this page to wear one on every boat.

Lake Victoria trips and tours
Boat trips and day tours from Entebbe and Kampala, with live prices and availability.
Safety on the lake
The ferry and the small boats are the part of the trip that needs the most care.
Choose a reliable operator
The UK advice names overloading as a common factor in ferry accidents on Lake Albert and Lake Victoria. Use an established operator, and do not board a vessel that looks overloaded or unfit. Learn where the life jackets and exits are before you leave the pier.
Wear a life jacket
The US health agency CDC advises wearing a life jacket whenever you are on a boat. An operator saying that a jacket is available in an emergency is not the same as wearing one all the time, and child sizes may not be on board. Never take a small boat without life jackets.
Know the ferry rules
On the Bukakata to Bugoma ferries, the operator advises arriving 30 to 60 minutes early. The driver leaves the vehicle at the gate, vehicles and travelers are registered, and there is a security check. During the crossing, nobody stays in a vehicle, and life jacket boxes must stay clear. Follow the crew.
Expect delays
A press report of 4 September 2026 describes complaints about late sailings and unreliable arrival times on the Entebbe to Kalangala ferry. Do not plan a tight connection, such as a flight on the same day. See the ferry page.
Watch the weather
Storms build quickly on Lake Victoria. Check the forecast, and accept a delay or cancellation. The weather page shows the rainy months.
For context, the Uganda Police Force's 2025 annual crime report records 128 marine incidents handled across the country, of which 81 were on Lake Victoria. These are police cases of all kinds, not a count of capsized boats or tourist accidents.
Health: malaria, bilharzia and animals
Malaria. The German Foreign Office describes a high malaria risk across Uganda all year, including in cities. No part of the islands is described as low risk. Use repellent and cover your skin at dusk, and ask a doctor about preventive medication before you leave.
Bilharzia. The CDC confirms schistosomiasis in Uganda and advises against swimming in fresh water that is not chlorinated, such as lakes, rivers and ponds. Infection can come from wading or washing, not only from swallowing water. A resort beach or a lodge that advertises swimming is not a health clearance. See beaches and swimming.
Animals. Do not touch or feed unfamiliar animals, including monkeys. If you are bitten or scratched, see a doctor promptly.

Entry rules and health notices
Changes from autumn 2026.
Yellow fever certificate
Uganda's immigration authority announced on 2 October 2026 that the yellow fever certificate is no longer compulsory for entry. This is a change in the rule, not a statement about infection risk. The German Foreign Office still recommends the vaccination, and a third country may ask for proof when you arrive from Uganda.
Visa
Visitors who need a visa apply online through the government portal. The single-entry tourist visa is USD 50 and can grant a stay of up to 3 months. Use the approval within 90 days of issue. Do not rely on getting a visa on arrival.
Ebola notice
The WHO and Africa CDC announced the end of Uganda's Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak on 27 August 2026. The outbreak in the DRC was still reported as ongoing in that notice. The German advice still lists the DRC border as closed with exceptions. Kalangala is far from that border.

Is Kalangala safe? Frequently asked questions

There is no blanket answer. The main risks are on the lake, from mosquitoes and from freshwater contact. Governments word their advice for Uganda differently, and the US level of 4 applies to the whole country.
Is the ferry to Kalangala safe?
Choose an established operator, avoid overloaded vessels and know where the life jackets are. Delays are reported on the Entebbe route. Read the operator's rules and the crew's instructions.
Do I need a life jacket?
Yes, on any boat. The CDC advises wearing one on every boat trip. Do not take a small boat without life jackets.
