Beaches on the Ssese Islands

The Ssese Islands sit in the middle of Lake Victoria, so every beach here is a lake shore. Some are sandy, some are fringed with trees, and a few belong to lodges. Do not expect lifeguards or marked swimming zones at any of them.

The key point comes first. The US health agency CDC advises against swimming in untreated fresh water in Uganda, including lakes, because of schistosomiasis, also called bilharzia. A beach that is advertised as a swimming spot is not a health clearance. Read the section on swimming below before you plan a beach day.

An advertised swimming spot shows what a lodge offers. It does not show that the water is free of parasites, and nobody can promise that for these bays. Our Bugala Island guide covers the main island, and the Banda Island page covers the smaller one.

Swimming and bilharzia

Schistosomiasis is caused by parasites released by freshwater snails. The CDC confirms that the disease occurs in Uganda and advises against swimming in fresh, unchlorinated water such as lakes, rivers and ponds. You can be infected by contact with contaminated water. Wading, washing and playing at the water's edge count as well, and swallowing water is not the only way.

No bay on Bugala or Banda is confirmed free of the parasite. The advice is a health recommendation and not a local ban, and the decision is yours. If you want to swim, a chlorinated pool at a lodge is a different case from the lake. Speak to a travel doctor before you go.

Other beach risks

Water is not the only thing to plan for.

Malaria

The German Foreign Office describes a high malaria risk all year across Uganda. No low-risk zone is known for Kalangala. Use mosquito repellent, long sleeves at dusk and a net where it is provided. Ask a doctor about prophylaxis.

Boats and life jackets

Many beaches are reached by boat. Wear a life jacket on every trip, as the CDC recommends. Do not board a small boat without one for each passenger. The UK government names overloading as a common factor in ferry accidents on the lake.

Monkeys and other animals

The CDC advises against touching or feeding unfamiliar animals. If you are bitten or scratched, see a doctor.

Weather

Storms can build on Lake Victoria. For Entebbe, the historical averages show July to September and January and February as relatively dry, though not rain-free. Our weather guide has the monthly table.

Enjoying a beach without swimming

You can spend a good day at the shore without entering the water. Walk along the sand and watch the light change at sunset.

If you want activities, lodges offer boat rides, birding and nature walks, and on Banda there is beach volleyball and an evening bonfire. Fires belong where the lodge allows them. Our things to do guide lists ten ideas in all, and the fishing page covers the lake's anglers.

Ssese Islands beaches: frequently asked questions

Is it safe to swim in Lake Victoria on the Ssese Islands?

The CDC advises against swimming in untreated fresh water in Uganda because of schistosomiasis. No bay on the islands is confirmed free of the parasite. A lodge advertising swimming is not a health clearance.

What is the best beach on the Ssese Islands?

There is no ranking. Lutoboka Bay is near the main ferry landing, and Banda has beach cabins. Choose based on where you stay and how you travel.

Are there public beaches with lifeguards?

Do not count on lifeguards or marked swimming areas at the shore, and do not count on quick rescue help.

Do I have to pay to use a beach?

Ask the lodge or the landing community what applies. Do not assume that a beach is free or that a day pass exists. Lodges may have their own rules for non-guests.

When is the best time to go to the beach?

Historical figures for Entebbe show July to September and January and February as relatively dry. Rain is still possible in those months, and these are not local measurements for the islands.
